British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths. In 2023 it takes place on 10th–19th March and the theme is connections!

We've designed this activity to help you explore some of nature's most important connections – those within an ecosystem.

What is an ecosystem?

Ecosystems are communities of living and non-living things in an environment. The animals, plants and nature within an ecosystem are dependent on each other for survival.

Food chains activity

This activity is aimed at children aged 7–11. Use this to practice arranging animals and plants into food chains or food webs.

Instructions

  1. Cut out the animal and plant cards.
  2. On a piece of paper, arrange the cards into food chains or food webs. If you don't stick them down, you can rearrange them multiple times.
  3. Draw arrows between the cards to show what an animal or plant is eaten by.
