About the CSSE 11 plus
What is the CSSE exam?
The CSSE exam is an 11 plus entrance test used by state-funded grammar schools in Essex. It is used to assess:
Your child's progress and potential in core subjects
Whether your child is likely to thrive at grammar school
There is one entry test shared by all 10 Essex grammar schools. It is taken in September of Year 6.
How to apply for 11 plus exams in Essex
Registrations for the CSSE exam are open online from May to June.
Registrations are now closed for entering Year 7 in 2023.
Registrations for entering Year 7 in 2024 will open in May 2023.
When do 11 plus results come out in Essex?
Key dates for the CSSE (this takes place while your child is in Year 6):
21st July 2022: You will be sent information about test day
17th September 2022: Your child sits the test
13th October 2022: 11 plus results are posted to you
31st October 2022: Deadline for applying for school places (advised to wait for the 11 plus results before applying)
1st March 2023: You will find out which school has offered your child a place
What is the pass mark for CSSE 11+?
The pass mark varies year on year and depending on the school.
In 2021, these were the lowest scores at which children were offered a place:
Colchester County High School for Girls: 332
Colchester Royal Grammar School (Boys): 342
King Edward VI Grammar School (Boys): 345 (inside priority area), 375 (outside priority area)
All Southend grammar schools: 303 (inside priority area), 318–353 (outside priority area)
