Sir Thomas Rich’s School is a boys’ grammar school with a co-educational sixth form in Gloucester. It was founded by 1st Baronet Sir Thomas Rich in 1666 and originally occupied a central Gloucester house before moving to a site in the suburbs in 1964. 

The school is judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted, who concluded that pupils are “very happy in the school”. The report highlighted the school’s excellent pastoral care and breadth of extracurricular provision, which includes a range of activities in sports, music, performing arts and more.

## What are grammar schools?

Grammar schools are a particular type of secondary school in the UK. They are free for children to attend as they are funded by the government – unlike private schools, which rely on fees paid by parents or guardians. 

However, unlike other state secondary schools, grammar schools are academically selective schools. School places are awarded to children to pass an entrance exam known as the 11 plus (11+).

## How many grammar schools are there in Gloucestershire?

There are seven grammar schools in Gloucestershire:

## How to get into a grammar school in Gloucestershire

If you would like your child to be considered for a place in Year 7 at a Gloucestershire grammar school, they will need to take the 11 plus exam. All the grammar schools in Gloucestershire use the same test provider and allocate the same day in September for the exam. If you are applying to more than one grammar school in Gloucestershire, your child will only need to sit the exam once. 

In October 2022, the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools announced that they will be changing their 11 plus provider from CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) to GL Assessment. This is because CEM is changing their entrance exams from paper tests to online assessments, while GL Assessment is remaining paper-based and supplies familiarisation materials to applicants. 

Children applying to a Gloucestershire grammar school for entry in 2024 will take two tests in September 2023. One test will test children on their verbal skills (including reading comprehension, vocabulary and verbal reasoning), while the other will assess non-verbal reasoning and mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding. The two tests combined take approximately two hours to complete.

The second-highest rated state secondary school in Greater Manchester is the equivalent boys’ school to the one above. Altrincham Grammar School for Boys was established in 1912 and is also a member of the Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium. The school advocates for an education ‘in the broadest sense’ and encourages high performance and aspirations within and beyond academia for its students.

Students at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys have a celebrated track record of successes in sport, the arts, engineering, sciences and debating. In October 2013, a new physics centre was opened by physicist Brian Cox, housing six laboratories, a staff room and a large preparation room.

Founded in 1991, Sale Grammar is a mixed selective school in the Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium. It was rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in its most recent inspection and has specialist status in the Visual Arts and Science with Maths. As well as excellent exam results at GCSE and A level, the school has a high reputation for pastoral care, priding itself as a ‘happy and vibrant place to be.’

Established in 1909, Loreto Grammar School is a selective Catholic school for girls. The school prides itself on upholding the values of justice, sincerity, truth, freedom, joy, excellence and internationality. Both rooted in tradition and forward thinking, Loreto Grammar School aspires to nurture young Catholic women who are ‘alive to the needs of humanity and committed to making a better world’. Loreto Grammar School achieves strong academic results at GCSE and A level as well as the International Baccalaureate.

Unlike the other top Greater Manchester grammar schools, Loreto is not part of the Trafford Grammar Schools consortium (although it is in the Trafford region). This means it has a separate entrance exam from other grammar schools in the area. There is a maths paper set by the school which is similar to Key Stage 2 SATs. There are also English and verbal reasoning papers set by GL Assessment.

## How to get into a grammar school in Manchester

If you would like your child to be considered for a place in Year 7 at a Greater Manchester grammar school, they will need to pass the 11 plus entrance exam. Children take the test in September while they’re in Year 6. 

Five of the grammar schools in Manchester use the same 11 plus test, which is administered by the Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium. This means that children only have to sit the test once to apply to any of those schools.

## How to get into a grammar school in Essex

If you would like your child to be considered for a place in Year 7 at most Essex grammar schools, they will need to pass the CSSE 11 plus test. This is an entrance exam administered by the consortium, which consists of ten out of the 11 grammar schools in Essex.

## How to get into a grammar school in Birmingham

If you would like your child to be considered for a place in Year 7 at a Birmingham grammar school, they will need to pass the Birmingham 11 plus test. This is an entrance exam administered by the Birmingham Consortium, which consists of all eight grammar schools in Birmingham. Altrincham Grammar School for Girls (commonly abbreviated as AGGS) is a girls' grammar school in Bowdon, Greater Manchester and was awarded the title 'Northwest Secondary School of the Year' in 2022 by the *Sunday Times*. It was established in 1910 as part of the 1902 Education Act, which aimed to build new schools with enhanced education for girls. With over 1,300 students on roll, it is the largest single-sex grammar school in England.

St Anselm's College is a selective Roman Catholic school for boys in Birkenhead, Merseyside. The school was founded by The Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1933 in response to a request from the Bishop of Shrewsbury to provide grammar school opportunities for academically able Catholic and Christian boys in Wirral and Cheshire. West Kirby Grammar School is a selective school for girls, with a co-educational sixth form, on the Wirral Peninsula.
