The Perse School 11+ entrance exam
Children applying for 11+ entry to The Perse School take an entrance exam in January in Year 6. This consists of English, maths and verbal reasoning papers.
English
The English paper lasts around 45 minutes. Your child will need to read a passage of text and choose one of two tasks to complete. Both tasks test reading comprehension and creative writing skills.
Marks will be awarded for:
- the content of their writing (including how well they understand the passage)
- the techniques they have used in their writing
- their written accuracy (e.g. spelling, punctuation and grammar)
Maths
The 11 plus maths paper is a 40-minute non-calculator paper. This tests the knowledge and skills your child will have learned in Key Stage 2 maths, up to and including Year 5.
The paper is designed to be challenging. It will assess skills such as reasoning, problem-solving, and basic fluency with maths. It might test topics such as:
- calculations using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
- fractions, decimals and percentages
- units of time, money and measurement (e.g. perimeter, area, mass and capacity)
- names for geometric shapes
- angles (e.g. acute, obtuse and reflex) and parallel and perpendicular lines
- bar charts, pictographs and line graphs
- working with positive coordinates
- simple ideas on probability
- concept of negative numbers
- calculation of the mean (average)
Verbal reasoning
The verbal reasoning paper will last 40 minutes. This paper will test your child’s ability to use logic and reasoning to solve problems with written information. This might include words, letters, symbols and numbers.
Verbal reasoning is not taught on the national curriculum. Getting started early, with regular practice in bitesize chunks, can help your child get familiar with these question types.
In addition to the assessments, your child will have a group activity and a short informal interview. The staff at The Perse School will be looking for evidence of your child’s ability to engage with extracurricular activities and support the school values.
