About the 11 plus

What is the South West Herts Consortium?

Seven partially-selective grammar schools in South West Hertfordshire have combined to select their pupils based on the results of one 11 plus exam, known as a secondary transfer test. It is used to assess:

  • Your child's progress and potential in core subjects

  • Whether your child is likely to thrive at grammar school

These schools assess candidates on academic, music and/or sports criteria. This is unique to the South West Herts Consortium.

Which schools are in the South West Herts Consortium?

  • Croxley Danes School – music criteria only

  • Parmiter's School – academic & music criteria

  • Queens' School – academic, music & sports criteria

  • Rickmansworth School – academic & music criteria

  • St Clement Danes School – academic & music criteria

  • Watford Grammar School for Boys – academic & music criteria

  • Watford Grammar School for Girls – academic & music criteria

What is the Academic Ability Test?

If your child is applying to a South West Hertfordshire grammar school under the academic criterion, they will take two paper tests in maths and verbal reasoning. Both of these are administered by GL Assessment.

Your child may apply to any of the grammar schools under the music criterion or, if you have registered your child for Queen's School, the sports criterion. See the South West Herts Schools Consortium website for more details.
