As the school is a selective grammar school, admission to Boston Grammar School is decided by an 11 plus test procedure. Boston Grammar School also has a catchment area with priority given based on location and distance from the school.
If your son has passed the 11 plus, and you’ve applied by the closing date below, you will be formally allocated a place by the Local Authority on 2nd March, subject to availability. In the past, the school has always been able to offer places to all the boys who’ve met the entry requirements. You will receive a formal offer of the place, posted on 3rd March. You will need to accept the Local Authority’s allocation by 16th March to take up the place.
To apply for your child to sit the 11 plus exam at Boston Grammar School, you should apply as soon as possible on the school website. You will also need to apply for a school place on the Lincolnshire County Council website before 31st October.
The 11 plus exam for Boston Grammar School will be taken over two separate Fridays in September. Both exams will take place at your son’s primary school. Typically, each exam will take about 50 minutes to complete with all questions in multiple-choice format.
Paper 1: Verbal reasoning
Paper 2: Non-verbal reasoning (including spatial awareness)
Students must think outside the box, look for codes and patterns, and utilise their knowledge of symmetry, rotation, word building, and vocabulary in order to pass the exam. These exams focus on the application of cognitive skills.
Applicants will need to score in line with the top 25% of their cohort to be considered for a place at Boston Grammar School.

Little and often is key for efficient mastery of the material, so the earlier you start preparation, the less stressful it will be. The familiarisation materials on GL’s website are a useful tool to help your child get comfortable with the format and timings of the papers.
Practice tests are supplied and undertaken at the primary school prior to the real tests. When taking practice tests, your son should work fast and skip questions or take an educated guess if they are not sure, as the 11 plus exam will be timed.
