Like many other grammar schools in Kent, Invicta uses the Kent 11 plus test. Applicants must be registered for the Kent Test and need to submit the Kent Secondary Common Application form, specifying their school preference, the year before entry.
Registration for the Kent Test normally opens on the 1st of June and closes on the 1st of July. More details are available on the Kent County Council website.
Prospective applicants sit the Kent Test and express their preference via the Kent Secondary Common Application form. The school is typically in high demand and is oversubscribed with girls who have passed the test. When this happens, the following criteria is used:
Looked after and previously looked after children
Children with a sibling already attending the school
Those with medical, health and special access reasons
Children in receipt of pupil premium
Children of permanent members of staff
Nearness of children’s home to school
The Kent Test is a long-standing 11 plus examination used by most academically selective schools in Kent. It includes questions on English, maths and reasoning.
Girls applying to Invicta Grammar School take three exams:
English and Maths: One hour. 5-minute practise exercise followed by a 25-minute multiple-choice test for each subject.
Reasoning: One hour including practice sections and multiple-choice questions which cover verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
Writing: 40 minutes including 10 minutes planning time.
The writing exercise is not marked but may be used by a local headteacher panel in borderline cases.
If your daughter will be sitting the Kent 11 plus we recommend you begin your preparations at least a year in advance. English, maths and reasoning all deserve a high level of attention, and while some time should be spent on writing, it’s worth remembering that it isn’t given the same weight as the others.
Kent County Council have published a familiarisation paper and further subject-specific materials which can be found on their website.
