How to apply to Watford Grammar School for Boys

Watford Grammar School for Boys is partially selective. While most places in Year 7 are non-selective, some places are allocated based on academic ability or musical aptitude through the South West Herts Schools Consortium tests.

You must register your son for the relevant aptitude test if you wish to be considered for one of these places. Registration opens on Wednesday 1st April 2026 and closes on Friday 5th June 2026. A link to register will be available on the participating schools' websites during the registration window.

The academic ability test will take place on Saturday 5th September 2026. The first round music aptitude test takes place on Monday 7th September 2026, with first round results sent to you on Thursday 17th September 2026 at around noon. Boys who score highly in the first round are invited to the second round, which takes place between Monday 21st and Friday 25th September 2026. Academic and final music results will be sent to you on Thursday 15th October 2026.

To apply for a place at Watford Grammar School for Boys, you'll need to name the school on your common application form. This must be submitted to your local authority by Saturday 31st October 2026.

Important note: passing an aptitude test doesn't guarantee that your son will be allocated a place at your preferred school. Many selective schools are often oversubscribed with qualified children. After the 31st October deadline, schools use admissions criteria to allocate places.

What will my son be tested on?

Watford Grammar School for Boys uses both the academic ability test and the music aptitude test from the South West Herts Schools Consortium.

Academic ability test

The academic ability test consists of two papers, produced by GL Assessment. Both papers are multiple-choice.

One paper tests maths, based on the Key Stage 2 national curriculum. The other tests verbal reasoning and your son's ability to use logic and solve problems with written information such as words, letters, symbols and numbers.

Music aptitude test

The music aptitude test has two stages.

The first stage is a written test lasting around 45 minutes. There are 60 questions across four sections, played on a CD. These questions assess pitch, melody, texture, and rhythm.

Boys who score highly in the first stage are invited to the second stage, where they will need to perform a piece of music no longer than three minutes.
