The transition to secondary school is a big step for young people and their parents. The final year of primary school is an ideal time to help your child prepare for this big life change, both academically and emotionally. Keep reading for our top tips to set them up to thrive in Year 7 and beyond! 

## What is meant by transition in education? 

After moving from primary school to secondary school, students will encounter familiar subjects in new ways and in more depth. They’ll be expected to become more responsible for their own learning and take on greater independence, such as: 

- Travelling to school by themselves
- Understanding a lesson timetable and navigating to the right room (often in a much larger building than they’re used to)
- Using a homework planner and completing homework on time
- Remembering to take specific books and equipment to classes

## Why is transition important in school?

Moving from Year 6 to Year 7 is an exciting opportunity to develop social and academic confidence and build resilience. And adjusting to secondary school sets the stage for future transitions to further and higher education and employment. According to the [Nuffield Foundation](https://nuffieldfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/STARS_report.pdf), it’s ‘an important life transition that can affect children’s attainment and wellbeing in the longer term.’ 

But the differences between primary and secondary school life can feel overwhelming. The many unknowns, the influx of new faces, new teachers, academic pressures, trying to fit in and make new friends, and going from being the oldest in the school to the youngest again – all of it can be stressful for even the most outgoing young people.

## What makes a good transition from primary to secondary school? 

Starting preparation early, while your child is still in primary school, can help them ease into this next stage of their life. If possible, don't wait until the summer holidays – treat secondary school preparation as a marathon instead of a sprint. 

We recommend slowly introducing the activities below during their last primary school years. This can help your child build the skills they will need, reduce the chances of anxiety, and frame their upcoming transition as a positive experience.

### 1. Becoming responsible for their school items

Throughout Year 6, give your child increasing responsibility for their belongings. Encourage them to pack their own PE kit, remember their own homework, and put their school uniform away. You could create a checklist together that they can work through before bed to prepare for the next day.

### 2. Speaking to new faces

Starting secondary school comes with the challenge of building completely new relationships with peers and teachers. This can be daunting, but there are small everyday ways to help your child get more comfortable with talking to new people. Perhaps they can practise by saying ‘good evening’ and ‘thank you’ to their sports coach, or paying for purchases and asking questions when you go shopping together.

### 3. Recognising their strengths and areas for development

Read through your child’s school report together, allowing time to praise the positive feedback and talk through the constructive. Ask your child to highlight topics they’d like to improve on. What steps would they like to take? 

Starting this early in Year 6 allows plenty of time to work on the areas they find more challenging so that they start Year 7 with a strong foundation. [Parents’ evening](https://atomlearning.co.uk/blog/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-parents-evening) in the autumn term of Year 6 will give you valuable information. [A good tutor](https://atomlearning.co.uk/tuition) is another fantastic resource for identifying and targeting knowledge gaps.

### 4. Strengthening their time management skills

Lesson timetables, assembly timetables, homework timetables, revision timetables – they’re all about to become a big feature of your child’s secondary education.

A shared family calendar stuck to the fridge can help your child get familiar with using schedules in their home life first, before moving on to create a personalised study timetable together. ### 5. Exploring new connections together

Watching open day videos and attending induction visits can help them feel connected to their new school. If they’ll be taking public transport to their new school, travel the route together several times to help them get comfortable with timings and connections. Many secondary schools have a WhatsApp group or forum for parents of new pupils, and this is a great way for both of you to meet other families (and arrange car shares!). 

### 6. Ensuring continuity of learning 

Continuity of learning is vital for a successful academic transition. Primary and secondary teachers plan carefully to avoid gaps in the curriculum and unnecessary repetition when transitioning to secondary school. But many children struggle with variations in teaching practice and different curriculum models, which can cause a [dip in attainment in Year 7 pupils](https://cdn.oxfordowl.co.uk/2018/11/23/09/34/07/443/bp_continuitylearningphases.pdf).

It’s no secret that reading can have profound benefits for your child’s long-term development. For children sitting the [11 plus](https://atomlearning.co.uk/11-plus), regular reading can develop important skills for the English and verbal reasoning tests, such as widening vocabulary, sharpening analytical thinking and enhancing imagination. 

Some children are natural readers and some may need little encouragement from their parents. So how can you engage a child who is more reluctant to read? Read on for our top tips, free reading resources and a quiz!

## 1. Explore reading together

Committing time to read with your child is not only a great bonding activity, but gives you the opportunity to get involved in your child’s learning. Reading together provides a ‘safe space’ for your child to ask questions about new or challenging vocabulary and for you to discuss and interpret the meaning of the text as a team. 

Try regularly setting aside 20 minutes of time in the evening or at weekends for you and your child to explore reading together. 

## 2. Encourage all genres

Reading comes in all shapes and forms; books, magazines, comics, newspapers, recipes, labels, print adverts – they all count! Giving your child autonomy over their reading choices can help them feel in control of the activity and motivate them to explore further. 

Reading a variety of genres can also help your child grasp the nuances of different styles, tones and purposes, putting them in great stead for the 11 plus test. Take a look at some of the age-specific books recommended by Atom’s education experts at the bottom of this article.

## 3. Create a reading-friendly home

Ensure your child has plenty of opportunities for regular reading by leaving a variety of reading materials around the home – particularly in rooms where they play and relax, such as the living room or bedroom. This will help to show your child that reading is a pleasurable activity that can be accomplished anywhere and is not restricted to a certain location (as disciplined activities, such as homework, often may be). 

If your child has access to a variety of reading materials and the freedom to choose which to interact with, they’ll develop their own natural curiosity and begin to refine which types of materials they’re most interested in. 

## 4. Use libraries and bookshops

It can be challenging to introduce your child to ‘old-fashioned’ reading in a digital world. However, public libraries and bookshops do still exist and are great environments in which to allow your child to hone their specific reading interest. 

Most UK schools have a school library, which is a great place for pupils to develop an autonomous reading habit and explore recommendations from their peers and school librarians. If your child’s school doesn’t have this facility, it may be worth taking a trip together to your local public library or bookshop to allow them to browse a variety of age-appropriate titles and select their own material. 

## 5. Be a reading role model

Children are impressionable, and you’ll no doubt have experienced intriguing moments where your child has copied your language or imitated your behaviour! However, this natural admiration may not be quite so apparent when they reach their teen years, so make the most of this window of opportunity and role model good reading habits. 

Be visible when you’re spending some time with a book or a newspaper and allow your child to ask questions about what you’re reading and invite them to get involved.

## King Edward VI Aston School 11 plus admissions process
 
All grammar schools in Birmingham, including King Edward VI Aston School, follow the admissions criteria set by the [Grammar Schools of Birmingham Consortium](https://atomlearning.co.uk/blog/birmingham-11-plus-test), which is based on pupils’ academic performance in the entrance exam.
 
Boys are selected for admission based on their combined [age-standardised score](https://atomlearning.co.uk/blog/what-is-a-good-11-plus-score) in the 11 plus exam. To qualify for admission, pupils need to achieve the minimum standardised qualifying score in the exam. Due to the popularity of King Edward VI Aston School, not every boy who achieves the qualifying score can be offered a place. 
 
Where the number of eligible applications for admission exceeds the number of places available, places will be prioritised on the following basis:

1. Looked After Children/Previously Looked After Children who achieve the qualifying score. 
2. Children attracting the Pupil Premium who achieve the qualifying score and live within the school catchment area.
3. If fewer than 35 places (25% of the PAN) are filled by applicants in category 2, offers will be made to children attracting the Pupil Premium who achieve the qualifying score and live outside the catchment area.
4. Applicants who achieve the priority score and live within the school catchment area. Applicants in this category will be given priority if they have an older sibling at the school; then ranked by distance from the school.
5. Applicants achieving the qualifying score. Applicants in this category will be ranked by test score. Where scores are equal, priority will be given to those with a sibling at the school; then ranked by distance from the school.

## How and when to apply for 11 plus entry to King Edward VI Aston School
 
To apply for Year 7 entry to King Edward VI Aston School, parents need to register their child by completing an [online application form](https://www.birminghamgrammarschools.org/apply-onlineapp.php). Additionally, a Local Authority Preference Form needs to be completed, ranking their choice of schools in order of preference.  
 
Online 11 plus test registration forms are available from May. The closing date for applying to sit the 11 plus test is at the end of June.
 

## King Edward VI Aston School entrance exam format
 
There are two exam papers, each approximately 50 minutes in length. Papers are divided into smaller individually timed sections which test:

## What is the Poole Grammar School 11 plus exam format?

The Dorset Consortium 11 plus entrance examination is provided by [GL Assessments](https://atomlearning.co.uk/blog/gl-11-plus-guide). It consists of a maths, English and verbal reasoning paper, lasting 45-50 minutes. Extra time can be requested during the registration period if supporting evidence is supplied.

## What is the Trafford Grammar Schools 11 plus test?

The 11 plus test, taken in the final year of primary school (Year 6), is an exam designed to evaluate your child’s potential to excel in a grammar school environment. The test assesses several areas, some underpinned by national curriculum teaching, others requiring problem-solving skills relating to subjects which your child won’t have encountered at school. 

There are seven grammar schools in Manchester's Trafford area – five of which combine their testing procedures by making up the [Trafford Grammar School CEM Consortium (TGSCC)](https://traffordcem.applicaa.com/2). This means that your child only has to take one test to apply to multiple schools in the area.

You can register for your child to sit the test from 9th of May 2022 until the deadline of 24th June 2022.

## What is covered in the Trafford 11 plus test? 

The test consists of two papers, each covering two subjects: 

- Paper 1: English (reading comprehension) and verbal reasoning 
- Paper 2: Maths (numerical reasoning) and non-verbal reasoning 

There is no written task element involved in this test. Each paper takes about 45 minutes, although additional time may be included for instructions and examples.

These questions are mainly answered in multiple choice format, with some maths questions requiring a specific digit answer. There is no written task element.

### Reading comprehension

Your child will be given an extract of text, followed by questions designed to test their inference and deduction skills. The questions are multiple choice but some questions may require more than one answer to be selected. A broad vocabulary and practice reading widely is helpful for this section.

### Verbal reasoning

Confidence with constructing words and identifying sequence errors are helpful to excel on this section. As verbal reasoning is not taught at school, it's helpful to familiarise your child with verbal reasoning question styles well in advance of the exam. 

### Maths
The maths section is based on the national curriculum content for Key Stage 2 – but this includes Year 6 concepts your child will not yet have covered in the classroom, so home practice is key. Your child's speed of recall of numerical facts will be tested. The questions cover topics including: 

- Number and place value 
- Addition and subtraction 
- Multiplication and division
- Fractions including decimals and percentages 
- Ratio and proportion 
- Algebra 
- Measurement including area and perimeter
- Geometry

### Non-verbal reasoning 

Non-verbal reasoning assesses your child’s problem solving and spatial awareness. Your child is given a set of graphic puzzles and sequences and they must highlight areas of mistake as well as complete the patterns.

## What is the pass mark for the Trafford Grammar Schools 11 plus test? 

The qualifying mark for schools in the Trafford Consortium has historically been 334. Some schools' admissions criteria allow automatic allocation for the top 20 scoring pupils. These scores are [standardised](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RObT2Q7F1SI), to even out any age disadvantage for children born later in the year. 

Gaining a score of 334 does not automatically qualify your child to be selected for their school of choice. It is advisable to familiarise yourself with the admission policies for your target school, looking at their oversubscription criterion and their catchment area.  


## How competitive is the Trafford Grammar Schools 11 plus test? 

There is significant competition in Manchester to attend one of the seven grammar schools in the area. For example, 2,454 children sat the 11 plus in 2020 for entry into Sale Grammar School, with 954 pupils achieving the qualifying score, although there are only 180 Year 7 places available at the school.

## How and when to apply to Wycombe High School 

Wycombe High School considers candidates who obtain the qualifying score of 121 in the Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools Secondary Transfer Test. Any children attending primary schools in Buckinghamshire are automatically registered for the Buckinghamshire Council 11 plus. Applications for a particular school place must be made through the [Buckinghamshire Council website](https://www.buckscc.gov.uk/apply-for-a-school-place/). 

Children who attend schools outside of Buckinghamshire or independent schools can register for the test between 6th May 2022 and 24th June 2022. Applicants also need to notify their home local authority of their school preference. 

In 2021, Buckinghamshire Council Secondary Transfer Test results were released on the 15th October and the deadline for school applications was 31st October. The national offer day is set to be 1st March 2022. 


## Wycombe High School 11 plus admissions process

As a leading academically selective grammar school, Wycombe High School uses the Buckinghamshire Council’s Secondary Transfer Test, set by [GL Assessments](https://atomlearning.co.uk/blog/gl-11-plus-guide). 

The pass mark is 121. Wycombe High School also offers places to up to 12 qualified disadvantaged girls living in the catchment area who have achieved over 115 in the Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools 11 plus. After that, in cases of oversubscription, remaining places are awarded using the following criteria in order: 

- Looked after and previously looked after children
- Girls living in the catchment area
- Younger sisters of girls in Years 7-12 already at the school
- Other qualified disadvantaged girls living outside the catchment area
- Daughters of members of staff
- Younger sisters of incoming girls in Years 7-12
- Distance order 


## Wycombe High School 11 plus exam format and content

Applicants for Wycombe High School sit two multiple-choice papers on the same day:

- Paper 1 (60 minutes, including 20 minutes for introduction and examples): comprehension, technical English and verbal reasoning. 
- Paper 2 (60 minutes, including 20 minutes for introduction and examples): non-verbal reasoning, spatial reasoning and mathematics.

The pass mark is 121. If the school is oversubscribed with applicants who have reached that score, the following criteria are used:

The Royal Grammar School is one of the UK’s leading selective state schools for boys with a 450-year history. The school is situated in High Wycombe, one of Buckinghamshire's largest towns. Aside from ranking within the top 200 schools in England, it is also one of the top 10 performing secondary schools in Buckinghamshire.

Boys who attend a Buckinghamshire Primary school are automatically registered for the Buckinghamshire Council Secondary Transfer Test (the 11 plus exam taken by applicants to the Royal Grammar School), and they will sit a Preparation Test before the Secondary Transfer Test in September.

In the case that your son does not attend a Buckinghamshire Primary School or attends an independent school, [applications can be sent to Buckinghamshire Council](https://www.buckscc.gov.uk/apply-for-a-school-place/). The deadline for applications is 23rd June 2022.

There are 13 schools in the Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS) company, including the Royal Grammar School. To get into Year 7, applicants must pass two 11 plus exams. Applicants must achieve the required score to gain admission.

The applicants’ scores will reflect an [age-standardised scoring system](https://atomlearning.co.uk/blog/what-is-a-good-11-plus-score) to ensure all candidates have a fair chance regardless of their birthday.
