What is the 11 Plus Exam?
The name refers to the age at which children start secondary school. Children sit the exam in the autumn term of Year 6, when they are 10 or 11 years old.
The 11 plus tests a combination of English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning, though the exact subjects vary depending on the school. It's designed to identify children working at the top ability range for their year group.
The 11 plus is only used in England. There are no grammar schools in Scotland or Wales, and Northern Ireland replaced the 11 plus with the Transfer Test in 2008.
Some selective independent schools also use entrance exams at this age, though their admissions processes and difficulty levels vary separately from grammar school exams.
11+ Exam Boards: GL, CEM & CSSE
GL Assessment is used by many grammar schools across England. GL tests are multiple choice, with children completing a question booklet and shading their answers on a separate answer sheet. These are marked using Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) technology. GL exams typically cover English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning, though the combination of subjects varies by school.
FSCE exams also use a multiple choice format with question booklets and answer sheets. The subjects tested are similar to GL, but the style of questions differs. FSCE exams are known for being less directly tied to curriculum content.
Some grammar schools write their own bespoke 11 plus papers, which may require written rather than multiple choice answers.
Because the format varies so much by region and school, it's essential to check the specific requirements for your target schools before starting preparation. Practising with the right question style makes a significant difference on exam day.
Note: CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) is a separate regional provider worth checking if you're applying to schools in Essex.
11+ Subjects & Question Types
English covers reading comprehension and spelling, punctuation and grammar. Some schools also include a creative writing element, which is marked by examiners rather than by machine.
Maths is based on the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Some exams include Year 6 content your child may not have covered yet, testing how well they can apply problem-solving skills in unfamiliar situations.
Verbal Reasoning tests cognitive ability using letters and words — including patterns, connections, and logical thinking. It is not taught on the national curriculum, so most children will need to practise this separately.
Non-Verbal Reasoning assesses the same skills using shapes and diagrams rather than words. Like verbal reasoning, it is not part of the standard school curriculum.
Most 11 plus papers are multiple choice. Exams are typically structured across two or three papers, often sat on the same day.
How to Prepare for the 11 Plus
A few principles make the biggest difference:
Start with the curriculum. English and Maths are based on Key Stage 2 content. Your child should feel confident with these foundations before moving on to exam-style practice.
Tackle reasoning early. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning are not taught in school, which means most children encounter these question types for the first time during preparation. The earlier they start, the more familiar these sections become.
Practise in the right format. The 11 plus has its own structure, timing, and question styles. Practising with realistic papers under timed conditions helps your child build the exam technique they'll need on the day — not just the subject knowledge.
Use mock tests. Full mock tests replicate the pressure of the real exam, highlight areas still to work on, and build confidence before the big day.

No. The content, format, and difficulty of the 11 plus varies significantly depending on the region and the school. Some grammar schools are part of a consortium, meaning all schools in that area use the same test and your child only needs to sit it once. Others use their own bespoke papers. The exam board also varies; many schools use GL Assessment, others use FSCE, and some write their own tests. Always check the specific requirements for your target schools before starting preparation.
There is no single pass mark. Each grammar school sets its own threshold, and the score needed will depend on how many children apply and how competitive the cohort is in any given year. Most schools use age-standardised scores to compare applicants fairly. When results are released, you'll typically be told whether your child is eligible for a place rather than given a detailed score breakdown. Check the admissions criteria for your target schools for guidance on what they look for.
Yes. Most 11 plus preparation takes place at home, and a structured approach makes a real difference. The key is using resources that match the style and difficulty of your target school's exam. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning in particular need dedicated practice, as these subjects aren't covered in school. A mix of topic-based practice questions, timed papers, and regular review of weaker areas is the most effective approach. Atom's platform is designed to support exactly this - with adaptive questions, downloadable practice papers, and automatic marking.
Children sit the 11 plus in the autumn term of Year 6. Most grammar schools hold the exam in September, though a few sit it in early October. Exam dates are usually released during the summer term of Year 5. Registration deadlines vary by school - some open and close in the spring term of Year 5, while others don't open until the summer - so it's important to check dates for each school you're applying to.
Each paper typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes, including a few minutes for practice questions at the start. Most grammar school exams consist of two or three papers, usually sat on the same day with a short break in between. Some schools spread the papers across different days. The total time your child spends in the exam will depend on the number of papers and the specific format used by their target school.
Most families begin preparing in Year 4 or early Year 5. Starting earlier gives your child time to build skills gradually, which is far more effective than intensive preparation in the final weeks before the exam. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning benefit most from an early start, as these question types are unfamiliar to most children and take time to become comfortable with. A little and often approach — short, regular sessions rather than long, infrequent ones — tends to work best.
Yes. Online practice is one of the most effective ways to prepare, particularly for getting used to timing and question formats. Atom's platform offers adaptive practice questions and replica 11 plus papers online, with automatic marking and instant feedback so your child can learn from every answer. You can also download and print practice papers if your child's exam is paper-based and you want them to practise in that format too.
We’ve matched everything to the real exam — the curriculum, question types, timing and scoring. Our goal is for exam day to feel calm, familiar and free from surprises.
With Atom you can get unlimited practice papers for your child, with instant marking and progress tracking to keep them on track. By practising with Atom’s online and downloadable tests, your child will know exactly what to expect, helping them feel confident and ready.

Mock exams are full practice tests that replicate the format, timing, and conditions of the real 11 plus. They're one of the most valuable tools in exam preparation. Taking mocks under realistic conditions helps your child get used to working under time pressure, reveals which areas still need work, and builds confidence before the actual exam. Atom's replica mock tests are designed to match the style of the real exam, with new questions generated each time so your child can practise repeatedly without seeing the same paper twice.
In most cases, your child will only be able to sit the 11 plus once per school, per year. If they don't achieve the required score, they won't be able to resit for entry to the same school in the same year. However, if you are applying to schools in different areas that use separate tests, your child may sit more than one exam. Some schools may allow children to reapply the following year. It's always worth checking directly with the school or local authority for their specific policy.
It varies by school. Some grammar schools operate a strict cut-off, while others maintain a waiting list and may offer places to children who narrowly missed the threshold if spaces become available. A small number of schools also have appeals processes. The best source of information is the individual school's admissions policy. If your child is close to the threshold, it's worth contacting the school directly to understand your options.
Atom Home has practice tests for hundreds of grammar and independent schools. Exam Prep Plus subscribers get downloadable paper tests and answer sheets: print, test, and photo your child's answers to see their results.

Atom recommends the right type of practice for the schools you’re aiming for. If your target school uses a computer-based exam, Atom suggests online mock tests. If the exam is on paper, you’ll get downloadable practice papers instead.
All online and downloadable tests on Atom are unlimited. Your child can repeat a test for the same school as many times as they like with fresh questions each time. This means more practice, less pressure, and better preparation.
