Are you considering a grammar school for your child?

There are over 160 grammar schools in the UK. Your area may have more grammars than others - for example (Kent alone is home to nearly 40!).

To help you find and compare grammar schools in your area, we've put together everything you need to know about the best grammar schools in the UK.

Find out which 100 grammar schools have topped the league tables for 2025 and learn how to apply for a place.

What is a grammar school?

A grammar school is a secondary school in the UK that accepts pupils based on their academic ability. Children take an entrance exam known as the 11 plus when they are in Year 6. The children with the highest scores are then eligible for a place at the school in Year 7.

Unlike private schools, grammar schools are state-funded – so there's no cost for parents. Grammar schools provide high-quality teaching and offer a great range of facilities for activities such as music and sport.

Getting into a grammar school is challenging. Competition can be high, particularly in areas such as London.

What is the 11+?

The 11+ exam is an entry test for selective schools. It's used by grammar schools and selective independent schools. Children aged 10 or 11 take the 11+, usually in Year 6 for entry into Year 7.

The 11+ tests core skills in English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. It gives students a Standardised Age Score (SAS) used to access entry for selective schools.

Not sure where to start with 11+ prep?

Our free 11+ baseline test helps you take the guesswork out of studying. Your child will answer questions across English, maths and reasoning like the real ISEB exam.

You’ll get results in an instant! This includes their standardised age score (SAS), a breakdown of their strengths and areas to improve, and the next steps to help them improve.
