Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Horncastle is a co-educational grammar school that has existed since at least 1327 and is in possession of a Royal Charter. It welcomes pupils from Horncastle and its surrounding areas, including Wragby, Bardney, Woodhall Spa, the Wolds, towards Boston and the RAF base at Coningsby.

The school was originally boys’ only but girls were admitted when the school relocated in 1908. Since then, Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School has expanded with both land and buildings and is a founding member of the Horncastle Education Trust.

The school specialises in science and foreign languages and is partnered with Banovallum School (also in Horncastle) with the aim of establishing Horncastle as a ‘Centre for Excellence’ for science education.

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Horncastle is rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, making it one of the top 16 secondary schools in the county.

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Horncastle is responsible for its own admissions arrangements and works closely with Lincolnshire County Council (the Local Authority), which holds details on all the dates and procedures.

Students who wish to join Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Horncastle in Year 7 must achieve the minimum standard score in the 11 plus selection tests, which are set and standardised on behalf of the Lincolnshire Consortium of Grammar Schools.

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Horncastle will admit 120 pupils who are in the top 25% of the ability range. If the number of successful candidates exceeds 120, the school will apply the following oversubscription criteria in order:

  1. Looked after and previously looked after children

  2. Children who are eligible for pupil premium or the service premium

  3. Children whose permanent address is within the school’s designated area for free transport (priority within this category is given to the order of their total scores in the entrance test)

  4. Eligible children from all other ares, with priority given to the order of the test scores

Practice papers for verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning tests will be made available to Lincolnshire feeder primary schools in June. These are representative of the actual tests, but not identical.
