Chesham Grammar School is one of 13 schools that are part of The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS) company. On the same day, students sit two 11 plus exams to gain entry into Year 7. Successful applicants must achieve a qualifying score.
Should there be more applicants than available spaces, priority is given to:
Looked after children and those that have been looked after previously
Students who are currently eligible for free school meals at the time of the application deadline
Those with siblings currently enrolled at the school
Children who are within the catchment area of the school
Students with exceptional medical or social needs that can only be met by the school
The school waiting list is ranked according to the above criteria. Further information is available on Chesham Grammar School's admissions policy.
The applicants’ scores will reflect an age-standardised scoring system to ensure all candidates have a fair chance regardless of their birthday. The total of the age-standardised scores provides an overall Secondary Transfer Test score (STTS). Children will need to obtain a score of at least 121 to receive a place at the school.
If more candidates obtain the STTS than there are places available, the oversubscription ranking (above) will be followed.
Chesham Grammar School follows a catchment area system. Priority is for those who live closest to the school. There is a map of the Chesham Grammar School catchment area on the school website.
Primary school pupils in Buckinghamshire are automatically registered, and they will take a Preparation Test before sitting the Secondary Transfer Test in September.
Buckinghamshire Council can accept applications if your child does not attend a Buckinghamshire primary school, or if they attend an independent school. Applications must be submitted by 23rd June 2022.
The 11 plus test at Chesham Grammar is administered by the GL exam board. In the autumn, candidates will take two tests on the same day. Each paper is approximately 60 minutes long. The test will assess verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths skills.
Pupils must develop a study plan and schedule in advance if they want to perform well on exams. We recommend that pupils start preparing early so there is time to identify strengths and weaknesses. Looking at past exam papers will help your child become familiar with the format and style of questions. GL Assessment offers free familiarisation materials and papers on their website.
