Sutton High School is an independent day school for girls aged 3–18 in Sutton, South West London. It’s a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) – a network of 25 all girls’ schools across England and Wales. Sutton High School’s three core values are courage (empowering girls to embrace challenge), truth (promoting a sense of belonging) and joy (fostering a love of learning).
Pupils at Sutton High School join one of four houses, named after women connected to the school: Dora Black (former pupil who was an author, feminist and campaigner), Phyllis Mudford King (former pupil and tennis player), Henrietta Stanley (co-founder of the GDST and campaigner for women’s education) and Frances West (the first Sutton High School pupil known to have attended university).
Girls at Sutton High School have a bespoke curriculum with personalised learning targets to keep them in the stretch zone. Lessons are active, interesting and upbeat. In 2021, 69% of GCSE grades were 9–8 (A* equivalent) and 80% of A level grades were A*–A.
There are many opportunities to learn new skills and develop new interests beyond the curriculum within the school’s co-curricular programme. In Year 7 and 8, the Kaleidoscope enrichment programme offers courses including Ancient Greek, musical theatre, cake decorating, magic, acoustic guitar, ceramics, digital photography and chess.

If your daughter is applying for a scholarship, there may be additional steps to this admissions process:
Academic Scholarships: Girls sitting the 11 plus entrance exam in Year 6 are automatically considered for Academic Scholarship, with awards based on the results of the exam.
Art Scholarships: Candidates will be asked to submit a digital portfolio of their work along with a reference from a recognised art teacher. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to take a practical exercise and have an interview with the head of art.
Drama Scholarships: Potential drama scholars should have had significant performance experience both within and outside school. Candidates will need to submit a reference from a drama teacher and a digital recording of a monologue from a published play. Shortlisted candidates are invited to an audition, where they will present a monologue and take part in a group activity.
Music Scholarships: Eligible candidates are those who are of Grade 5 standard on their main instrument. Candidates will need to submit references from a current music teacher and a digital video recording of a performance of one piece. Shortlisted candidates are then invited to an audition, which will include a live performance. Sports Scholarships: Girls eligible for a Sports Scholarship are those who currently represent their school in more than one sport and are members of a recognised sports club/association beyond school. Candidates will need to submit a reference from a recognised coach or teacher and identify their preferred sport and level of performance. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to attend an assessment day, which will include the following activities: alternate ball toss, 8-minute maximal run, Illinois agility run, 50m sprint test, movement routine, online resilience test and an interview.
Outcome letters are posted to girls by mid-December 2022. In accordance with the code of conduct by the Girls’ School Association (GSA), places will need to be accepted by the first Friday in March.
